What does it take to open a small town business and convert it to be nationwide? Is every human being capable of dealing with all the complications, stress, and failures that occur in the process? How much time, money, and effort is exhorted into building the best corporation it can be? These are a few questions that may come to mind when examining a corporation that has conquered it all. Walter had better and bigger plans for a company that could change the world. Walter had the very first Petco store open in the town of Tigard, Oregon, which is right outside California. The first store open its doors in the year of 1980 and from that point on opened and entirely new evolution of the pet care industry (Petco,2014). The store is known to be a helping hand to all of the four legged friends out there through the Petco Foundation (Dosh, 2007). When Petco began to make great progress and success, it fell back on the two pet supply chains acquired in 1988. These two supply chains were known as WellPoint and the Pet Department. These two supply chains helped Petco tremendously by more than tripling the amount of stores from approximately 40 to 130 in the areas of Oregon, Washington, and even Texas. As the year 1992 came around, Petco Inc had made their way over to the east coast of the United States and even opened a store in New Jersey. The slogan “Petco where the pets go” was then introduced and made Petco one of the top recognizable tag lines in the country at this time. By 1994, Petco Inc has really began to show its progress in being an extremely successful corporation. In 1994 Petco had gotten the publicity they had needed and was soon known as the largest pet specialty retail chain. By this point in time the number of stores Petco established had increased rapidly. Petco, at this point, was officially running a total of 218 store in thirteen different states across the country and produced an annual sales profit of $189 million (Petco, 2014).
