Phonics instruction helps students process the connection of the written language and spoken word. There are three parts to phonics which is alphabetic principle of letters, pattern of the letters, and the meaning of the words and the their different forms. Students are taught how to decode words and learn by analyzing the onset and rimes. For example, if the student knows the rime -at, they can easily read the words such as pat, sat, cat, and mat. Students should be practicing and reinforcing the skills they learned, so they can be able to decode words on their own. Teachers are able to model phonics as they instruct their students and continue to talk about their writing. Consonants and vowels present their own issues for struggling learners, Consonants can be difficult to learn the pronunciation and position for the mouth for each letter's sounds. I will guide my students to discovering the patterns of the language system. I will develop a planned system of how I am going to instruct my students. Appropriate text is a factor that plays into many concepts to be learned and I will defiantly ensure that my students are introduced to text that will benefit their learning. When teaching phonics I will choose text that uses emphasizes rime and onset, predictable, and uses rhyming words. I will encourage my students to make connections with the words and their sounds while they are reading through activities and shared reading. For more information go to:
