Physician Assistant Research Paper
Every state in the US has an affiliated chapter branching from the national organization that advocates for all Physician Assistants, known as the American Academy of Physician Assistants (AAPA). The American Academy of Physician Assistants handles licensing requirements, networking opportunities, job resources, and provides tools to improve PA practice and patient care for each state and federal service chapter. These individual state affiliations branching from the AAPA are pertinent to the Physician Assistant profession because they allow for more direct and local resources for Physician Assistants. Having an individual state chapter makes it easier to find local jobs in the area and get answers to questions about each state law requirement.
The physician assistant occupation truly began in 1965 when a considerable shortage of physicians brought forth a breakthrough. At this time there were also many corpsmen returning from the Vietnam War with adequate skills to access surgical conditions but without the formal education. A man by the name of Dr. Eugene Stead then created a program at Duke University to give these people formal training and education. By the time they finished their two-year fast-tracked program these individuals would be equipped to provide medical care to underserved populations and rural communities under the direction of a physician.

Physician assistants work under the supervision of a physician. The service provided by a PA is contingent upon their education, experience, the state laws, facility policies and the needs of the patients at the practice. The standards which defines the service that PAs provide allow for faster, effective and specialized health care. Physician Assistants are licensed to obtain patient medical histories, conduct physical exams, diagnose and treat illnesses, order and interpret test, develop treatment plans, assist in surgery, write prescriptions for controlled substances, and educate and counsel patients.
The Accreditation Review Commission on Education for the Physician Assistant requires that each PA program provide, "…classroom and laboratory instruction in the basic medical and behavioral sciences (such as anatomy, pharmacology, pathophysiology, clinical medicine, and physical diagnosis), followed by clinical rotations in internal medicine, family medicine, surgery, pediatrics, obstetrics and gynecology, emergency medicine, and geriatric medicine" (AAPA, 2000). Physician assistants are trained to serve as clinical partners to primary care physicians, handling routine office visits, taking call, and performing inpatient rounds so that the physician is freed up to handle more clinically intensive patient needs (Russel Johns Associates, 2001). Additionally, some PAs support physicians in certain specialty areas such as anesthesiology, radiology, neurology, and gastroenterology performing various levels of technical procedures based on supplemental training and physician granted autonomy (Grandinetti,
To investigate the role of a physician assistant, I have completed thorough research along with discussion with physician assistants at the Rhode Island and Miriam Hospital. From researching I have learned that they work under supervision and responsibility of an attending physician. However, they have several independent duties that are extremely important to healthcare. They are experts in general medicine and take an important position in diagnosing, treating, and prescribing medicine to patients. Physician assistants receive education and go through clinical rotations involving several different departments.
Medical Office Assistant has many responsibilities. Medical Office Assistant is the heartbeat of a medical office or hospital. Being a Medical Office Assistant involves assisting the administrative by handling clerical and clinical duties. Some duties are filing medical records and maintaining the front office such as keeping everything organized and answering the phone. Handling final payments, medical records, scheduling, final management are other duties of a Medical Office Assistant.

After completing your education as a medical assistant and you qualify for national certification as a medical assistant, the certifying organizations require successful completion of continuing education credits within a certain time frame to maintain active Medical Assistant certification. Flexible Schedules Another benefit of working as a medical assistant is choosing between part-time or full-time work. For those who thrive on having a stable schedule with predictable hours, many MAs work in clinics that operate during standard business hours. This can be a big plus for working parents with kids in school or childcare. A predictable daytime schedule has perks, like not being called to work in the middle of the night or getting pulled away from your child’s weekend soccer game to cover a shift.
It is also the responsibility of the physician assistants to examine patients, as would a doctor, in order to obtain information about a patients’ physical condition. In some hospitals physician assistants could find themselves practicing medicine on teams with other physicians, surgeons, and other healthcare workers. They would examine, diagnose and treat a multitude of patients from a broad range of backgrounds.
Pathologist’s assistants (PA) play a crucial role in the diagnoses of patients, as they are the eyes of the pathologist. These skilled professionals provide the hidden connection between a patient’s pre- and post-diagnosis life, and it must not be understated how much professional trust and confidence a pathologist places in their PAs to best serve patients. After being introduced and experiencing this relatively unknown and underappreciated profession first-hand, it is my life goal to become a PA and share my passion with others.
