I have known for a long time that Baylor is where I belong. When I realized this in junior high, I never would have expected the opportunity to attend an event like Invitation to Excellence. I have continuously seen the Lord open doors for me to be able to attend my dream school. Not only was the event a chance to improve my financial situation, but exhibit Baylor University’s unique characteristics and different aspects of the medical field. Invitation to Excellence provided me with insight, friendships, interpersonal experience, knowledge, critical thinking experiences, and opportunities.
As highly successful students, many participants tended to lean towards being the leader of the group, including myself. When multiple leaders work as a group trying to accomplish something, disorder can ensue. It is easy to put your ideas above others and have an insolent attitude. I now have a higher understanding and respect for the assiduous work of health care providers. As I think about myself in my future career as a physician, seeing a myriad of patients a day, it’s vital to not only see these people as bags of organs with simple issues that need fixing, but see their lives as stories. It’s salient to look at their being; physicians have to see inside people’s hearts and souls to completely understand the correct treatment plan. It is easy to get caught up in treating patients with monotonous protocol. Especially in disasters, psychological health has to be acknowledged.
