In the short story “Totem” by Thomas King, the author efficiently utilizes symbolism to convey a profound abstract meaning throughout the story. The totem pole serves as a symbol, representing cultural identity and connection to the past. At first, the totem pole is dismissed by Walter Hooton, as nonexistent, denying it existence and significance. The totem pole’s presence challenges the preeminent narrative of the contemporary Canadian art exhibition and reminds us of the overlooked histories and traditions of the indigenous peoples. Mrs. Hills astutely remarks, “it would be a fine world if paintings or photographs or abstract sculptures began carrying on like that.”

I think he would buy these because in the book when he lived in the Bronx's he would go to shoe stores with his friend Justin. I think he would pick this model of shoes because air Jordans were very popular at the time and they still are. Plus these are basketball shoes and for a short time in the book he wanted to be a NBA player until his uncle Howard stopped him.
Those are the two things that I was looking for when I walked in the museum because that is all we talked about in
Focusing first on Wilson’s opening piece, it is possible to see how this particular Museum in Maryland, as an institution, is criticized. Wilson, when “mining” the museum in which his exhibition was displayed, found the busts of three prominent American
Kansas has many stories to tell to those who want to learn about them. Of the many places to learn about the stories that took place in Kansas, the High Plains Museum, in Goodland, Kansas, offers exhibits on the prairie life and the life of a Kansas homesteader. In all the exhibits to see, however, the Pioneer exhibit, the Dust Bowl Years exhibit, and the Purvis and Wilson helicopter exhibit make this museum particularly interesting. In the Pioneer exhibit, the patron can walk down a small wooden plank sidewalk with a few business displays on both sides where the patron can look into each window and see examples of businesses, like an optometrist’s office and a doll shop, that include something a person would see during the 1800s era.
When analyzing and reviewing Susan Curealean’s essay "Origin Moment” and Melissa Walker’s excerpt from "Rock Spring" one will find commonalities of elements that truly show the importance of our first connection with nature. The reader is able to see that one’s origin moment, “the spilt second early in life when memory takes hold in the body,” of nature specifically concludes in defining who the person is as an individual and how they view the environment around them, as well as how they take care of that particular environment. " Origin Moment” and "Rock Spring" are both able to discuss the importance of our first connections with nature due to writers, Susan Curealean and Melissa Walker reminiscing if you will, on past experiences and how those experiences have shaped each of them as the individuals they are today. Susan Curealean’s essay "Origin
I think that Horace Miner was attempting to be satirical in describing American culture in order for other anthropologist to look at their own culture more subjectively. He calls the tribe Nacirema, or American spelled backwards and calls everyday objects by there more literal names, like charm box (medicine cabinet) and mouth-rite ritual (brushing your teeth). Miner makes us think that this is a Native American tribe to play off our thoughts and stereotypes that we may have. He wants us to think this is a tribe of backwards people when in fact he is describing Americans. For example, he talks about the chest built into the wall of the shrine that holds magical potions that no one believes they could live without and people seek out the
In “Wordsmith” by Young and “The Gold Mountain coat” by Fong Bates both passages show relationships between fathers and their children. The relationship between father and daughter in “Wordsmith” contrasts greatly with the type of relationship that Sam Sing has with his children. Although the relationships are very different, both passages show the importance of communication between family members. In “Wordsmith” the father is trying to fix the relationship between him and his daughter like how he is trying to fix the maintenance of the house, “he begins the... process of filling in the gaps...
Meanwhile, Lacrosse is similarly played in history as it was played and invented by Native North Americans. The purpose of Lacrosse is to solve tribal disputes, please their gods and honour themselves. (History) These purposes and reasons are similar to the ones shown in “The Orenda”. In history, Lacrosse is a problem solver to help settle disputes between tribes as Native North Americans were introduced to new cultures and religions.
The Orlando Museum of Art, also known as OMA, is a hub of Central Florida when it comes to pulling in remarkable works of art for the public eye to pay patronage to. Today I visited such a place for the annual Antiques Vintage and Garden Show, which took place between February 19th through the 21st. Included in the price of a ticket was also admission to The OMA’s current exhibitions, which included Women of Vision: National Geographic Photographers and their other running exhibits, which contained an array of work, ranging from Pre-Columbian sculptures to more contemporary works of the 21st century. The specific exhibit which held my interest most was the Pre-Columbian, Mesoamerican gallery titled “A Trek from North to South”, which was organized by geographic locations in Latin America. Since my girlfriend, Illiana, bought me tickets to the show for a
When individuals imagine Vermont, they often envision a landscape of green fields with cows surrounded by colorful bright trees. Albers discuss the myth and reality about Vermont during the nineteenth-century in which Romantics very much so “believed in the ideal of an unspoiled American wilderness, its surface barely brushed by the hand of man” (Albers, p. 164). Many of these Vermonters wanted the land to appear “untouched” and natural yet due to economic necessities, operations such as lumbering and mining copper in areas including Vershire for example, the land experienced major unnatural changes. Vermont was depicted by State Geologist Albert Hager in his published “Report on the Geology of Vermont” in 1861 which captured Vermont as being wild, not very populated, and full of farms and villages” (Albers, p. 193).
In the short writing by Mathilda Tham "Of Mice and Lice and Women" the controversial relationship between nature and humans is discussed with humor and honesty. At the end Tham makes a statement "declar[ing] this risky awkward space open. " By this she means that the area to which humans coexist with nature, is now obtainable to change. In other words Tham is discussing the proximity between nature to animals to machines, nature to humans to science, and specifically nature to humans to fashion. The focus of the risky space involves healing the power struggle between holistic and disturbing pieces of nature versus people and human kind.

William Shakespeare was born in Stratford-upon-Avon, and baptized there April 26, 1564. His actual birthdate remains unknown. He died April 23, 1616 and is the third of eight children, being the eldest surviving son. Even though Shakespeare does not have any records of school as a young boy, it is believed that he attended King’s New School in Stratford. Since he was born in the Elizabethan era, grammar schools varied, but all taught basic Latin text by royal decree, and based their teachings around classical Latin authors.
