Conquistador, written by Buddy Levy about the famous ventures of Hernan Cortes, places the reader in the 16th century, or the era c.1450-c. 1750 ce. During this time, the idea of exploration was spreading quickly, as kingdoms and empires in Europe sought to expand their territory. Portugal, with Spain following after, led the way for exploration as they headed south. Spain, however, ventured west, driven by a patriotic attitude of expanding past their borders. Levy tells the story of Hernan Cortes, originally setting sail from Spain, as he sailed from Cuba to the shores of Mexico in 1519, eager about the discovery of new lands.
I am Panfilo Narvaez, and I was the leader of the expedition. Cabeza De Vaca was a captain of one of my many ships that I had. I was from Spain and they sent me to find land. During the navigation, they made some stop, not a lot of fishermen were found but the ones he met were happy at all with his arrival.
First of all Hernan Cortes was searching for the New World and happened to find Central America. Second of all he had no choice, Hernan Cortes feared an attack forcing him to take Montezuma hostage. Some might also argue that Hernan Cortes was a villain because he brought many diseases with him killing many people. But Hernan Cortes didn’t know he was carrying any diseases. Therefore the spread of diseases isn’t Cortes’ fault he didn’t know what would come of his
Vasco Nunez de Balboa is a Spanish conquistador who spent many years exploring the Isthmus of Panama and the surrounding areas in the early 1500’s. Balboa was sent to explore anywhere in the New World as long as another explorer was of had not already explored there. The only other request of Balboa was that he had to give one fifth of the riches he found to Spain. We believe that Balboa’s personal motives in exploring this area were to take over the land and acquire gold and other riches. He would stop at nothing to acquire these riches.
They often killed and robbed several natives for their gold, as Document Six tells us. They were incredibly greedy, and wanted wealth and riches, as opposed to friendship and peace. Their cruelty grew so terrible that the Native Americans they tormented became afraid of the word "Christian," as the Spanish plunderers called themselves as such. Document Six was written by a Spaniard calling for reform. Document Seven displays Native American life as if it were quaint and quiet.

May 18, 1539 I got recruited to start an expedition going to Florida with the leader of our expedition Hernando de Soto. Furthermore in the expedition, I didn’t have a clue about our general, I just knew his name. Then in the expedition I heard from a few other soldiers Hernando de Soto told everybody why our group of people is going on this journey. On his second trip he brought dogs to hunt down and rip the arms and legs off the Native Americans who tried to escape. Along with this he conquered their land and spread disease killing around ninety percent of the Native American population. The Spanish wanted to convert the Native Americans so they forced Christianity upon the Native Americans.
The next symbolism in the narrative are the stones, which is used as the villagers weapon to terrorize and murder each other, Shirley Jackson describes the day of the lottery holding saying “the morning of June 27th was clear and sunny, with the fresh warmth of a full summer day”, “the people of the village began to gather in the square”(290).then Shirley Jackson narrates the symbol subtly narrating “Bobby Martin had already stuffed his pockets full of stone, and the other boys soon followed, selecting the smoothest and roundest stones”(290). the stones symbolizes death in the story and first introduced as a foreshadow in the beginning of the short story and once story goes further and then it unfolds that the stones are collected to kill whoever
European explorers and conquistadors during the age of exploration were motivated by three things: God, gold and glory. The two most prominent of the three between 1492 and 1607 were gold and glory. Beginning in 1492 gold motivated many explorers, from Christopher Columbus’s voyage to the New World to the Virginia Company’s colonization of America. Gold is a symbol for wealth, and many explorers soon realized the New World’s potential for wealth. The Spanish’s interest in wealth inspired Columbus’s expedition in the first place, as he was sent to India to trade for spices.
In the year 1519, Spain set sail to be the first ones to circumnavigate the globe. Under the leadership of Ferdinand de Magellan, they were able to accomplish this monumental task by the year 1522, even though Magellan died before they journey was complete. In the article titled “Ferdinand Magellan 's Voyage Round the World, 1519-1522”, we are able to recall the accounts transcribed from the paper-book of a Genoese pilot who wrote detailed accounts about the events that transpired throughout the journey. Around 55 years after Spain’s voyage, the English set out to circumnavigate the globe under the leadership of Sir Francis Drake in the year of 1577. An article titled “Sir Francis Drake 's Famous Voyage Round The World, 1580” was written by Francis Pretty, who was one of Drake 's Gentlemen at arms.
The Catholic Church and Latin America The Catholic Church was a great power ruling many civilizations in Europe during the period between 1492 and 1830. Therefore, the role of the Catholic Church was of utmost importance to the colonization and development of Latin America as it was a great force in Spain and Portugal. Despite the peaceful teachings of the Church, greed and a hunger for power led them to make decisions harming Latin America and Christianity, rather than thriving it. In this paper, I will show that the Catholic Church is significantly responsible for the colonization and development of Latin America through, the Christianizing mission, the Treaty of Tordesillas, and the Spanish Inquisition.
