Essays and other writing assignments are given to students as learn about a variety of topics. They can be used to reinforce what students learn or to continue students learning. While these assignments may be hard, it is best to do them. Some students use notes, concept maps, or outlines to complete the writing assignments. Other students plagiarize. Plagiarizing is easy to avoid and not good for the student.
One example of plagiarism is “cutting and pasting without attribution”. This is probably the most common form of plagiarism amounts online students because most of writing is done on a computer. I have learned that if I go to another source for information, this source needs to be credited. Even as I read through my source, I think to myself how I will introduce/quote the information and what format it will be in on the Works Cited page. One rule that I stand by to prevent plagiarism is this, "if I get the information from somewhere else, I need to show where". First, the student misses out on learning. Taking the time and energy out to form unique thoughts improves the way the brain functions in and out of schooling. How will you know about rhetorical analyzing when you write a review on a book that was recently released? It does not help you that someone else knows the information you should. Secondly, there is something awesome about knowing you earned a good grade by your own work. There are many times as a student that I have had many "Aha!" moments when I find a theme in my paper or I think of a brilliant way of wording something I want to say.
