As I engage this unit’s Read and Attend assignments, I find that my understanding of plagiarism is not as fully developed as I had previously thought. Our Unit 3 Attend assignment shares that “in a general sense plagiarism may be caused by carelessness” and these circumstances frequently precipitate the lack of care required while writing (Bethel University, 2014, p. 11). The academic integrity tutorial provided additional information which I found valuable as well. Common themes within each unit assignment provide strands of continuity, while assisting with a more comprehensive understanding. It is my opinion, the type of plagiarism that is hardest for me to avoid is “plagiaphrasing”, also known as “lazy paraphrasing” (Bethel University, 2014, p. 12).
In Mark Twains's Letters, Mark address Helen Keller by telling her that she should not feel discouraged for using plagiarism since it is commonly used. He writes the letter to her explaining that plagiarism in unescapable since your thoughts are "second-hand." Mark uses words like "your" and "you" to identify that the audience is Helen. The letter first starts off with a greeting to Helen, then he dives into explaining how plagiarism can not be avoided, and finally concludes the letter with a short goodbye. This structure helps the reader to understand that this was a letter written to a friend.
Tobias Wolff’s novel Old School conveys the ideas of honor, identity, voice and competition through the experiences of a boy who attends a preparatory school in the 1960s. The unnamed narrator’s actions are caused by the visiting writers, who definitely influence the narrator more negatively. Although the purpose of the famous writers visiting the school is to influence the narrator at the prep school more positively by helping him build character and allowing him to pursue perseverance, in reality the pressure the writers add discourages the narrator from finding his own voice and adds even more competition to an already extremely competitive school. During the years 1880-1920 there were many issues because of urbanization and industrialization. The industrial revolution brought many new job opportunities with low wages making companies focus on women and children. These opportunities were available but at a cost, they were paid less and they were forced to work up to ten hours. The industrial giants made labor a tough and unfair lifestyle. They wanted more riches, but they were making people suffer in order to obtain the money.
Mark twain’s writing as well as Frederick Douglass writings have many similarities and differences. The similarities and differences come from the tone of their writing and the language of their writing. Some ways their writings are similar is because they are both in first person narrative writers. They both use the words I and my in their writings.

What evidence does she use to support her claim? Rebecca Schuman supports her claim by stating that students will do anything to avoid writing a college paper (things like buying, borrowing and stealing other people’s work). Schuman claims that plagiarism is so common now and teachers dislike grading papers as much as students hate writing them. Schuman also claims that many of the topics assigned to students are useless she believes that college students could learn more from any type of examination. In the second paragraph, Schuman provides what she believes every college student does when they are assigned a writing assignment “summarize the same four plot points 50 times until you hit Page 5, and then crap out a two-sentence conclusion?”.

The method of research, citing facts, and brainstorming ideas was very intense in this class. Reading various arguments debating the topic I want to write on, was very challenging and time consuming. In this reflection essay I want to show how researching process was vital on changing my writing style. Also, what I’ve learned in English 105 class after a great summer semester with lots of material to learn from. There has been an assumption that academic writing is getting to be less formal as it is expected by many institutions. The informality in written work has become a standard thing in most public domains. With close observation, writers have literary shifted from the normal standards of writing and styles of writing that are impersonal. However, the assumption has not been examined in the recent past.
