As I engage this unit’s Read and Attend assignments, I find that my understanding of plagiarism is not as fully developed as I had previously thought. Our Unit 3 Attend assignment shares that “in a general sense plagiarism may be caused by carelessness” and these circumstances frequently precipitate the lack of care required while writing (Bethel University, 2014, p. 11). The academic integrity tutorial provided additional information which I found valuable as well. Common themes within each unit assignment provide strands of continuity, while assisting with a more comprehensive understanding. It is my opinion, the type of plagiarism that is hardest for me to avoid is “plagiaphrasing”, also known as “lazy paraphrasing” (Bethel University, 2014, p. 12).

It is something that can hardly impact others, but can greatly impact the person committing the act. Although many people believe that students in college or high school are old enough to be treated like adults and should know better, they restrict them with the honor code which demeans them and expects the worse from them. If they should be treated like adults, is it not fair to trust them to not cheat or plagiarize like one would trust any other adult not taking an exam or completing a paper? By involving the students, promising privacy, and coming to a consensus with ways to effectively inflict discipline, the honor code will not be a set of rules that the students will have to follow, but will, instead, instill a sense of unity between the student body and staff and achieve
With consistent discussions and reminders of the consequences of cheating, it would become clearer to students both the repercussions of academic dishonesty, but also set an important social precedent around cheating. Additionally, it has been observed at school with honor codes that as more people in a school are honest, an honor code will amplify these positive traits and create a feedback loop where the expectation of being caught is higher and students are less likely to cheat (Source
Having consideration of these thoughts will lead to knowing that nervous beginners can result in cheating students. To prevent these products, there should be a course on how to handle the temptation of cheating, also the teaching of what is and what is not plagiarism.
