In the Norton Field Guild, chapter four is about developing academic habits of the mind. Chapter four starts out with how the student needs to engage him or herself in to their academic studies. It talks about how you should raise your hand in class and you should ask questions in class and outside of class if you don’t understand what you are learning about. The other way you should be getting involved, is getting to know the students at the school and in your class because those who are engaged tend to study more and engage in their studies. The other main point of this chapter is about being motivated to do your school work and go to school.
Leadership activities such as mentoring, tutoring, and leading minority incentives have taught me the value of being an attentive listener and also how to teach a variety of learners. Research training conducted at the University of Florida, Malone and Brown University has developed an attitude of commitment and independence. Lastly, being a student has instilled the value of dedication, strategic planning, persistence, and commitment. Additionally, clinical experience has emphasized the importance of details, proper documentation, consistency, problem solving and team-work. We are less than a week out from several of our events and two weeks out from many of the rest. I look forward to seeing what we can roll out as a group and seeing the success of all of our events. In my first participatory classroom assignment, I assigned myself two overarching goals to complete this semester. These goals, based on attendance and classroom participation, were accomplished to the best of my ability. My second participatory classroom assignment is a detailed analysis of this and the extent of my learning in Joe’s class. After assessing my completion of my previously stated goals and depth of learning, I believe that I have earned an A/A- as my participation mark. This mark takes into account my overall successes and shortcomings in achieving my goals for this semester.
My Classroom Environment Ideally, my classroom would be a strong community of interactive learners. I would like to use cooperative learning to engage students at various academic levels. This would also give me the opportunity to employ direct teaching for those students that need it while others work in groups. Groups also allows me to use peer tutoring and help build an inclusive classroom by integrating groups (Hallahan et al., 2012).
Cooperative learning model is an active process where students work in small teams/groups, each with students of different levels of ability, use a variety of learning activities to improve their understanding of a subject.
