The purpose of the Plant Mineral Nutrition Lab was to grow Helianthus annuus plants also known as sunflower seeds in order to see the effects that nitrogen has on its growth. The first week, Helianthus annuus seeds were planted into a perlite. A week later, a beaker was given and the stock solutions for high nitrogen was used. In order for high nitrogen, the eight stock solutions were doubled. After the right amount of stock solutions was added, distilled water was added to reach the final volume. After, three seedlings were removed to put on top of the beaker. In order for this to happen, the roots were put in distilled water to remove the particles, a lid was cut out for support and put on top of the beaker, and the roots were put on top …show more content…

According to Table one, the leaf length, the leaf number, and the weight were higher than no nitrogen and high nitrogen. The height of the low nitrogen was a bit smaller than the high nitrogen, but the conclusion can still be made that the low nitrogen is used in order to grow the best Helianthus annuus plants. This is so because these plants need the macronutrient, nitrogen, in order for it to grow properly but it does not require a lot of the macronutrient. A lack of the macronutrient would make the plant grow slowly. This was the case with no nitrogen. The plants with the no nitrogen did not grow to be taller than the low nitrogen or the high nitrogen. Also, the lack of the macronutrient made the no nitrogen plants to have holes on their cotyledons, fewer nodes than the other two, and a thinner stem making it not a healthy plant. If there is a lack of a macronutrient, the leaves will end up having different colors and also the leaves might result in cell death. In this case, the no nitrogen had leaves that had brown and yellow pigments and the leaves were not healthy. The leaves were wrinkled and smaller. High nitrogen plants tend to make the plant not have proper growth in leaves. Having a lot of the macronutrient causes the plant to be very light and thin but it does grow faster than the low nitrogen and no nitrogen. To create the healthiest Helianthus annuus plants, the right amount of sunlight, water, and the nutrients are needed. In this case, the low nitrogen was the one that showed the best results in growth in order to grow Helianthus annuus plants. This lab experiment teaches us about how important the proper nutrients are to plant growth in order for them to grow healthy and have the best
