From the beginning of the eighteenth century, technology has allowed us to live a comfortable and affluent life. The Industrial Revolution had widely spread technology around the world; however, as a result of the revolution, our planet has been affected a lot. It caused many pollution problems such as air pollution, water pollution, and marine pollution. Those pollutions are one of the most serious issues and some organizations and governments have already started to work toward those problems. Unfortunately, plastic pollution in the ocean has not been recognized as an urgent problem. Since the ocean is treated as “the garbage dump” of the world for almost a century, there is a huge amount of plastic garbage. This essay will discuss the current situation, the effect on the marine environment and animals, plastic as chemical substance, and going to suggest the way to reduce the amount of plastic garbage in the ocean. Since the amount of the plastic production and consumption have constantly risen, a study estimated that the amount of plastic consumption will be 297.5 million tons by 2015. Eight million tons of plastic garbage have been thrown into the ocean every year. (Lytle, 2009). There are 5.25 trillion pieces of plastic garbage in the ocean. (Parker,2015) However, there is not much garbage around the Sea of Japan, even through one study says there is a huge amount of garbage in the ocean.
