This week in our language arts class we read the short story “Survive the Savage Seas” by Dougal Robertson, a story about a man and his family who sold everything they had to buy a yacht on which they would explore the open seas for the year, or so they think. To make a long story short the Robertson family and their family friend end up attacked by killer whales and the boat aka Lucy was sunk. They all pile onto a raft and dingy and then they are forced to live off the sea till they are rescued. This brings me to the question that is the origin of this essay; Can people live as successfully on the sea as they can on land. They would eventually over time become self-sustaining which means not relying on anything besides them selves to stay alive. So, they are able to collect water and store it, catch food and preserve it and, have a shelter that will last an extended amount of time. Once these changes are made they can transition from surviving to thriving. So, they are able to advance to a higher level of living and instead of using all their time on surviving they can do other activities. There is approximately 14 billion pounds of trash in all the oceans combined, so it is no surprise if someone surviving off the ocean comes across trash. If you can recall back to the second paragraph I mentioned that one of the necessary requirements to living successfully in the ocean or in any environment is to have shelter. In all that 14 billion pounds of trash there has got to be some that floats by a survivor raft. That trash that does is most likely able to be used in a beneficial way to that person. If it is used for collecting water or making a shelter it could possibly be a life
