The last few stanzas in the poem emphasizes Sankichi’s dissatisfaction towards the dealing with the aftermath: “Right beside the street people come and go, well-meaning but utterly indifferent, assaulted by the sun, attacked by the rain, covered over by dust, growing fainter year by year: this shadow” (31-34).
