A Valentine Edgar Allan Poe was a critic and editor and his work, best known for evocative short stories and poems, captured interest of readers around the world. Poetry Foundation states “Today, Poe is recognized as one of the foremost progenitors of modern literature” (Poetry Foundation). Poe was born on January 19, 1809 in Boston, Massachusetts. Poe’s parents were both professional actors in Boston. At the age of three years old, his mother died of tuberculosis and his father left earlier during his life. John Allan and his wife, Frances Valentine Allan, raised Edgar. Poe enlisted in the Army and published his first book. Just two years later, he learned that Frances was dying of tuberculosis but by the time he arrived in Richmond, she had passed. After her death, Poe focused on writing full-time and published his third book. On October 3 1849. Edgar Allan Poe died on October 7 1849, four days after being found in distress in Baltimore. Before his death, he published many great short stories and poems that are very much still alive in today’s society.
