My topic for this IB Individual oral presentation will be the affect that Edgar Allan Poe’s works had on his life. We already know that Poe was a very dark person and what I want to address is if he wrote such low-spirited things due to his gloomy life or if it was the writing that turned him into the dreadfully sad man he was. I have chosen this topic because Edgar Allan Poe was a very mysterious man and I find it interesting that his short stories and poems may display some of what he was feeling as if they explained his enigmatic life, but was it because he was felt more comfortable in his stories than the real world? When people think of poetry from the early nineteen hundreds Edgar Allen Poe usually comes to mind. Edgar focused on his personal feelings and hardships instead of the common trends that came along with poetry writing during that time. Light Hearted writing was not something in which he was interested in. Becoming a writer during this time period was extremely challenging, and Poe was the first writer to successfully make a career out of his work.
In some stories the characters’ names are signs of symbolism. For example “Prince Prospero” of “The Masque of the Red Death”, in which Prospero sounds like Prosperity which means wealth. So as in “Cask of Amontillado” a character named “Fortunato”, which sounds similar fortune which means luck, but to later find out he wasn’t very lucky. In all of Poe’s stories the character is rich, and each lives in a big house, mansion, or castle. Also in each of his stories they die.
Edgar Allan Poe was a very talented writer and poet but some people may disagree. A Soul with Sorrow Laden Edgar Allan Poe was born on January 1809. He is a famous American writer, poet and critic. I believe that his poems reflect his tragic and sorrowful life. The best stories you may ever read always come from a personal experience. It is much easier to base any writing off of something someone may have lived through, rather than something made up. Personal experiences really allow the author to describe what’s going on, and create a visual in the readers’ minds. Edgar Allen Poe is astounding when it comes down to creating a visual, that is what makes his stories especially fantastic, he really makes you feel as though you are one of the characters in the book. Edgar Allen Poe is known for his plot twists.
Today, Poe is recognized as one of the foremost progenitors of modern literature, both in its popular forms, such as horror and detective fiction, and in its more complex and self-conscious forms, which represent the essential artistic manner of the twentieth century. In contrast to earlier critics who viewed the man and his works as one, criticism of the past twenty-five years has developed a view of Poe as a detached artist who was more concerned with displaying his virtuosity than with expressing his "soul," and who maintained an ironic rather than an autobiographical relationship to his writings. While at one time critics such as Yvor Winters wished to remove Poe from literary history, his works remain integral to any conception of modernism
The Allan's were very poor. During the American Revolution, Edgar's grandfather David Poe, Sr. or "General Poe" used a part of his fortune to supply troops under the Marquis de Lafayette.
