Portfolio #6 Mikal Ocana Dover, Minnesota Saturday 27th of October, 1979 I got the call late, around 11:30 if I had to guess. The caller described the two bodies they came across. After the narrator killed the old man, two cops showed up to the home because of a noise complaint from a neighbor. He invited the officers in, figuring that they would not be aware of anything that happened previously. However, after spending time with the cops in no other than what was the old man's room, he started having insane anxiety. He started hearing the sound of the man’s heart; “The ringing became more distinct: –it continued and became more distinct: I talked more freely to get rid of the feeling: but it continued and gained definiteness –until, at length, I found that the noise was not within my ears” (Poe 7). At this point it was unknown whether or not the narrator was going to own up to the officers about what he did or if he would keep quiet and not tell them.
Also in paragraph 17 it states,”Why would they not be gone? For example, during the narrators visit to the old man, he claims that “there came to my ears a low, dull, quick sound, such as a watch makes when enveloped in cotton. I knew that sound too well. It was the beating of the old man’s heart.” The reason he knows the sound “too well” is actually because the heartbeat he hears is his own.

Modern artists today generally use images of physical and mental illness in literature. In The Tell-Tale Heart and The Fall of the House of Usher by Edgar Allan Poe, both short stories show the usage of illness, madness, and fear. The narrators in both stories try to convince the readers that the characters are physically and mentally ill. Edgar Allen Poe creates these vivid characters which successfully assist the building of plot and ideas. Poe demonstrates how a person’s inner turmoil and terror can lead to insanity through illustrative language.
Edgar Allan Poe’s use of literary devices to show the how fear of the characters in his stories are both helpful and harmful to them. Poe shows how the fears and obsessions of the narrators in his tales either lead to their inevitable death, or their miraculous survival. Edgar Allan Poe uses many literary devices in his texts, such as symbols, ironies, and figurative language, to show the strange and distorted ways of the characters, and the repercussion of their fears and obsessions. In Poe’s stories, a literary device he uses frequently throughout his stories, are symbols.

The Narrator acts extremely excited after the fact that he has killed the Old Man, yet this façade is completely abolished when confronted by the police, as he is overtaken by the guilt of the murder. Another character in the story is the old man, who also creates fear and dread in “The Tell-Tale Heart”. The old man, being oblivious to what is happening around him, is struck by paranoia as throughout the night sounds have been heard around him.
In the story, the narrator says “It was the beat of the old man's heart”(Poe). While hearing a heartbeat right before killing the old man. This proves that the old man is insane, because he believes that his own nervous heartbeat was that of the old man’s. A sane person would know that the heartbeat was that of their own and would know that you can't hear a dead man's heartbeat. The narrator also said that “The sound would be heard by a neighbor”.

From the very beginning of Edgar Allen Poe’s life, he was a mystery. But the most mysterious thing about his life is his death. The lack of information on how he died leads to several theories, which writers and experts have researched and it's come down to either alcohol or rabies. There is one reasonable explanation of how he dies, alcohol poisoning. There were many signs Poe showed related with alcohol poisoning, he had a past of drinking, and there is little evidence that rabies was the cause.
Throughout the story, three major details of the narrator’s psyche are confirmed. First, we learned of the narrator’s deceitfulness. Every morning he lies to the old man with the least bit of guilt. The next continues to prove the madness as the narrator feels utter joy from the terror of another. Lastly, the narrator fabricates that the old man is simply not home to assure the officers.
They heard!--they suspected!--they knew!--they were making a mockery of my horror! (page 181) Although some people say that the heart was still beating, that’s not possible because he chopped off all the body parts and took the heart out which makes it no longer connected and beating. Seeing that the old man's dead, and the heart is no longer pounding, how can he hear it? Therefore, this proves the narrator's
