The poet is the creator and the language is the material out of which he or she creates her work. Originally, poems were spoken and music was played in the background while being read. Similar to spoken word, many times, there will be music, and a beat that goes behind or with the words being told. Poetry, according to “What is Poetry” is a way for the poets to play with the words and arrange them to produce the poem. These kids are being looked at not only as kids but as poets. Jessica Bladon, who is a graduate from a school that offered the poetry in their curriculum said that she could see a drastic change in her classmates. The student who would be throwing paper at one another became calm and listened to what their classmates wrote about in their spoken word. They became interested in wanting to perform their works in public and share from their heart. Also, Denise Cotto talked about her incidents with being abused. She wrote this: “I’m trying to say this poem because it’s the only way I get to pretend you listen” (Rubenstein, picture in para. 16). That is very impressive, for a young student to be able to express her feelings so her abuser can hear her, through her words and performance. Through her doing that, it shows signs of a change in her life for the better. Emile Keller, another student, believes that a powerful poet will present with much conviction, to show the audience their character, and draw a picture in the audience’s mind. Many times, people will bottle up their hurt and their pain to the point where they cannot even connect with life. Spoken word is poetry because it is the heart of the poet on a piece of paper, or read to an audience. It is poetry because, it can be used to influence the students of today, and encourage them to be themselves through art and expression. Our future leaders need spoken word poetry to be able to clear their minds from the distractions that life is bringing to them today. Today’s world is not an easy one to live in, so if the future leaders can let out their frustration or joys through words, it will not only give them relief but for many students, it will keep them out of trouble. Poetry is art, spoken word is poetry, there is no difference, the only difference is the way you share your feelings (verbally or written). It is the contemporary poetry that is saving many people’s lives, not only personally, but with the Lord. Spoken word poetry has a positive effect on our future leaders of this world and is
