Physics Applications and Technology Pogo Stick Introduction The pogo stick is a toy invented by Max Pohlig and Ernst Gottschall in 1920. It was inspired by the spring stilt invented by George H. Herrington in 1891 which used springs on each foot. The pogo stick has one stick with two pedals and handlebars to rest both hands and feet on. A strong spring is attached to the bottom of the stick and a rubber piece is attached to the spring so that it grips the ground to prevent slipping. Many variations of the pogo stick have been designed such as the Vurtego, Flybar, BowGo, and the Up Wing pogo stick, but they all use the same concept of using a spring to launch a person off the ground. The pogo stick began to trend in the 1970s when they would be used in performances, contests, world records, and even wedding events. Pogo sticks have been improving in design and are now used in a new sport called Xpogo, which consists of stunts and tricks performed on a pogo stick. In this written report, I will discuss how pogo sticks create motion and use it to travel. This report will be broken up into three aspects to answer the following question. I will start by discussing the kinematics, by analyzing the projectile motion of a pogo stick. I will explain the importance of the jump off the ground, also known as the initial velocity of the pogo stick, in achieving greater heights and distances. This consists of the angle at which the pogo stick is launched and the speed at which you leave
