The NOPD’s long history of scandal reveals its institutionalization of corruption and brutality. In November 1980, white officer Gregory Neupert was shot to death in the predominantly black neighborhood of Algiers. During the investigation into Neupert’s death, four civilians were killed and many other Algiers residents were injured in police roundups and raids. The residents filed civil lawsuits against the police alleging mistreatment.
Police corruption is not something that is frequently talked about, and there are definitely very few films about the subject. One such film is Serpico, which is based off of the life of NYPD Officer Frank Serpico. The movie shows the issues of police corruption, and how the police subculture works to keep it covered. The police subculture is a very complicated and closed thing.
Rampart, a movie released in 2011, was set in Los Angeles in 1999. Dave Brown was an L.A.P.D veteran police officer working for the Rampart Division. Brown is a corrupt police officer, who is racist, violent, and self-centered. Many suspicious events involving Brown happen and the department gets put into a corruption scandal and everyone is pointing the finger at Brown. The first incident of corruption I noticed in the movie was when Officer Brown physically abused a suspect.

Marilyn Corsianos has tried to expand the reader’s knowledge and help them get a better view on how corruption and policing and their relationship to gender. She brings out to light many aspects of corruption that are not regarded as corruption but considering their nature they qualify to be referred to as corruption. Acts such as racial profiling, gender prejudice, and selective law enforcement are some of the corrupt acts that have been overlooked by the society. According to the book, police tend to defend injustices in the community other than fight them.
George Floyd was a man who was killed by an officer, where Floyd used a counterfeit bill at a store. Many BLM protests started to happen, and also police brutality or killing has become even more popular, as the police have to calm down the protests, which may result in protesters being arrested and maybe assaulted or dead. The novel All American Boys, a high schooler was assaulted by a police officer where he allegedly was stealing a bag of chips, when he wasn’t. The police officer assaulted him very badly, and ended up in the hospital for 3-4 days. Police have a lot of power to the point that they can kill someone for no valid reason and not get punished or at least reprimanded.
The first policing era which I’d like to discuss is that of the Political Era which lasted from 1840-1930. When first learning about this particular warp in time, it would be easy to think that everything was just as it should be. The police officers spent their time getting to know the citizens that lived in their patrol areas and they would get to know each shop owner and businessman alike. The officers would mostly run their routes on horseback or their bikes which created an intimate feeling of safety. But there was a downside to this perfect-looking, Mr. Rogers lifestyle.

Finally, I would like to look at a podcast called Serial. The first season of Serial follows the murder of a high school senior Hae Min Lee in 1999. After searching for six weeks, her body is found buried in the local park. Her ex-boyfriend, Adnan, is arrested and charged with her murder. However, Sarah Koenig, host of Serial, believes there is something fishy about the case from the start.
Policing can go as far back as Roman times where police would patrol the city for twenty-four hours a day. Later on in England, the king enforced a frankpledge system which grouped families together for protection and if they refused they would get fined. This system was the structure that helped enforce the law until the late 1800s. Since this system was poorly constructed and did not meet the criteria of actual preventable law enforcement a man named Sir Robert Peel established the Metropolitan Police Act. This became the first step towards modernized policing.
The development of policing in the United States followed the policing model in England and developed over decades. It was not until the 1880s that the United States established municipal police forces that were present in all major U.S. cities. These municipal police forces were similar in that they had public support, officers were employed and not volunteers, the departments had established protocols and rules, and the departments were accountable to the government (Lundman 1980). Policing is said to have gone through various stages the last few decades. Hooper (2014) points out that policing in the United States has evolved through three eras: The Political Era that had close ties to politics, the Reform Era that was developed because of the deficiencies of the Political Era and then the Community Era, that focused on Community Policing.
During the Gilded Age, the police was an entity highly corrupt. Also, police officer positions were political appointments. In general, a police officer did not earn too much money for salary, they got it from the extortion, conning and some numerous other illegal practices. Persistently, the police enforcement were extremely ruthless, and they also took the law in their own hands. For instance, they beating and punished people before arrested them.
According to Lee, Moore, and Kim (2013), some police supervisors are not only reluctant to reveal their subordinates’ misconduct, but are intentionally blind to their officers’ corruption. Oftentimes, supervisors who are willfully ignorant of corrupt behavior resist disciplining their officers, which, in turn, insulates dishonest officers from punishment. Therefore, the failure to discipline problem officers is a proximate cause of continuous police corruption. Frontline police officers are more likely to perceive corruption seriously when their supervisors apply more severe discipline for corrupt behavior. Frontline police officers are less likely to perceive corruption seriously when their departments have a stronger ‘Code of Silence’.

Due to corruption in the government, the 1920s was the most influential decade, politically speaking, in U.S. history.
Corruption is a type of misconduct and offense in which the police break their contract and oath by abusing their power for personal gain or even for departmental gain. Bribery- police officer receives bribes so that they cannot write tickets for people who have gone against the law for example, from prostitutes and gambling, bribery does not only affect the united states but its world spread, examples of other countries with highest percentage of bribery are Pakistan and France. b. Assault on suspects- police officers use excessive force on suspects leading to injuries and at times suspects end up dying in their custody. Some police officers have been charged with murder of suspects in their custody.
