In the political cartoon number 4, John A. MacDonald is portrayed as a small child. In the picture, a woman is escorting MacDonald to a teacher who represents Alexander Mackenzie. The cartoon takes place in a classroom with many kids in the background. A caption below it say “Pity the Dominie; or Johnny’s return”. This means you should feel sorry for the teacher for having to put up with MacDonald. Below the image there is a text box that says that MacDonald is full of mischief. The text box is coming from the woman in the picture. The woman represents Canada, and how Canada no longer trusts MacDonald. In image two women and one man shown. The two women represent the Canada and Britain. This is shown by the captions saying “Mrs Britannia” and “Mrs Canada”. The two women have a conversation with each other. In the captions Mrs Britannia asks if Miss Canada has ever given “Jonathan” any encouragement. Here she is talking about the only man in the picture. The man was made to represent America. This is shown by the man wearing stereotypical rich American clothing. It is also shown when Mrs Britannia refers to Jonathan as Canada cousin. This works because Canada and America were founded around the same time. To reply to this question, Miss Canada says in the captions that she never encouraged America and that Canada can never be united with America. This was said this to show how Americans are ruining Canadian economy. One way this was shown is how the person representing America was dressed in very fine and expensive clothing. The American was also enjoying a cigarette, a thing only the rich can afford.
