In the United States there are two major parties involved in our political structure, Democrats and Republicans. Since 1836, these two parties have dominated the political scene and Democrats and Republicans have controlled Congress and the presidency since 1860. Now, within these two parties there are people with progressive and conservative ideologies. These ideologies are not confined to only one political party, but instead are largely based on the individual’s opinion and perspective. Generally speaking though, most conservatives are Republicans and most progressives are Democrats.
The parts that stood out to me in this book were that the rate of neonatal deaths is higher in the United States than in any other developed country. I found this interesting because the idea that the old-fashioned theory has created some of the modern political beliefs of why a person may end up in a disadvantaged situation. Another part that stood out to me was when Abramsky hypothesized that if funds were spent on programs supporting individuals from the selected groups then less money would be spent on other government funded programs. Lastly, when Abramsky discussed the statistics about Bill Clinton lowering poverty rates from 15.1% to a little over 11% and then when Bush took over, the poverty rates rose again.
I believe that political parties were developed in the United States because they allow people to make decisions based on their beliefs. Both Hamilton and Jefferson were very great men but they wanted something different with the government. There are many reasons why political parties developed in our country. Hamilton and Jefferson have many differences between themselves.
Before 1824, presidential election voting was mainly based off of electoral votes. Although there was the popular vote, many citizens weren’t involved at the time. Shortly after when Adams won over Jackson as president, this all changed drastically. Opposing sides of the election became angered with their enemies and formed political parties, supporting one leader or the other. The two parties formed were the Whigs, and the Democrats that each supported a set of views regarding how the United States should have been ran and a certain person to fulfill these views.
A political party is two different organizations made up of people with different ideas for how the country should be run. They argue over “who is right”. Jefferson, the Democratic Republicans, and Hamilton, the Federalists, had very different ideas for the new nation.

Even citizens started to get involved. This dates back to the turn of the 19th century and is still causing disruption in the government today.

Both the Democrats and the Republicans like to think of themselves as the true heirs of Thomas Jefferson. The modern Democrats are historically descended from the Democratic-Republican Party that Jefferson himself organized to thwart the ambitions of Alexander Hamilton (although, ironically, they were known as "Republicans" in Jefferson 's time). Democrats around the country annually celebrate Jefferson-Jackson Dinners, avowedly declaring a connection between Jefferson and the modern Democratic Party. But Republicans claim that their platform of small government and low taxes is more in line with true Jeffersonian philosophy than that of the big-government Democrats.
The Democratic Party is labeled as a “purple party” with Blue leaders, while the Republican Party is a Red Party with Red Leaders and only gets redder. This means that members of the Democratic Party lean less to the left than Republican members lean to the right. Members of the Republican Party are more “pure” in their views, while members of the Democratic Party are not as firm in their blue stances. Democratic leaders and members are more like to defect from their views than Republican leaders and members. Democratic-leading independents, for example, are more likely to vote Republican than pure Democrats.
A political party is an alliance of like-minded individuals who work together in an effort to win elections and control the government in their favor. They compete against each other for political power and the ability to put their ideologies into affect. There are two major parties in the United States, the Democrats and the Republicans. Their philosophies and political platforms are very different. Democrats believe in a strong federal government that has an active role in citizens lives while republicans believe in a small government that should have little to no role.
