In the United States there are two major parties involved in our political structure, Democrats and Republicans. Since 1836, these two parties have dominated the political scene and Democrats and Republicans have controlled Congress and the presidency since 1860. Now, within these two parties there are people with progressive and conservative ideologies. These ideologies are not confined to only one political party, but instead are largely based on the individual’s opinion and perspective. Generally speaking though, most conservatives are Republicans and most progressives are Democrats.
After fighting for America’s independence the nation was faced with the situation of developing their own government; with that idea the Articles of Confederation were made as a way to define the government’s structure. With the articles came dysfunction, and a lack of authority. Consequently the dysfunction caused division in the nation, separating the people into two political parties, Federalist and anti-federalist. The parties developed over time and discord, with the development of the Constitution into the Federalist Party and the Democratic Republican Party. The two parties, the Federalist, and the Democratic Republicans, based on their backgrounds and means of income, opposed each other with differing political and economic views.

Because they were represented as an independent nation, the Republic of Texas, there weren 't any sort of political activities or parties. But during the 18th century, the democratic party came into existence in Texas. They were the most dominant political party and held thier reign until 20th century. Based on the political debate, I’ve learned many things about the Democratic-Republicans and the Federalists. For example, the Democratic-Republicans believed that having an economy that was based upon agriculture and farming was the best way to succeed. They thought that most citizens were good, and that there should be a more state-centered government so that the people can generally rule themselves. Democratic-Republicans thought that if the constitution didn’t specify something, you can’t read between the lines and make up what you want to do. They also believed that they should help France in the war against England because in the American Revolution, France had helped them.

The United States of America as they stand today are a result of the evolution of the frameworks our founding fathers set in to place long ago. Among them were the Articles of Confederation, the Virginia and New Jersey plans, the Federalist Papers, and the Constitution. Beginning with the original frame work for the government of the United States, the Articles of Confederation, established in 1781, formed a firm league of friendship among the states, instead of a government for the people (Dye, Gaddie 66). When making this choice it is important to examine the events of the time period, ideals of the candidates, and the states of the political parties. Both parties possessed differing beliefs, with Federalists favoring a strong central government and the Democratic-Republicans favoring power to the states. These two totally different political parties were able to agree on one very important topic, their goal and a free republic for our nation. However, if the topic “government” gets brought up, they have two totally different ideas. The Federalists thought we should have a strong Federal Government with a national bank. On the contrary, Democratic Republicans wanted a weak federal government with state banks. Even though we used to be ruled by the British, Federalists were Pro - British, whereas Democratic - Republicans were Pro - French.
Thomas Jefferson once said. “There is nothing which I dread so much as a division of the republic into two great parties”. The reason he said this was because he feared a strong central government. Then for some Americans, fears of a strong central government taking advantage came true. This is when the two political parties split.
Federalist vs. Anti-Federalist During the building of America’s government identity in the 1780s, the colonies were politically divided between two parties; the federalists and the anti-federalists. Typically the lower class, anti-federalists generally pushed for stronger state power. However, the wealthy and propertied class, the federalists, pushed for gains through a stronger national unity. The opposing groups worked hand-in-hand in creating the structural framework of the United States of America.
