In Shakespeare’s Henry VIII, Cardinal Wolsey undergoes a series of tone changes while considering his sudden downfall from power. On a deeper level, however, the tone changes represent stages of loss; therefore, the soliloquy is an accurate account of how the Cardinal is psychologically affected by his downfall. Through several poetic devices such as allusion, figurative language and tone, Shakespeare explores Cardinal Wolsey’s immediate psychological effects due to a sudden fall from grace. The first tone established by the excerpt emphasizes that the Cardinal’s first response to his dismissal is anger, making readers doubt his intentions as a Cardinal.

All books that young adults read have power. Their power results in their ability to sway and to change the reader in so many ways, not the least of these is morally. The local hotel we stayed at was just down the road and provided an exquisite lodging experience we seldom find elsewhere as we travel. Roaming the grounds of Colonial Williamsburg, we stopped and listened to a woman in character explain here day to day responsibilities of taking care of the household while her husband was out in the field harvesting crops. Another actor was explaining his day to day life as a blacksmith forging swords for the local regimens. The employees that are on staff facilitating presentations at various stations around the compound, maintain the character for the period of the historical person they are portraying with remarkable acting.

However, it would be plainly mistaken to construe that Shakespeare’s works do not still remain integral to a twenty-first century society. Shakespeare’s plays gave the words and expressions one uses every day, revolutionized the art of theater as it was known, and forewarned about issues that would unknowingly still apply centuries later. Therefore, Shakespeare has had a profound effect on our lives by enriching our language and culture, as well as providing ideas that would still apply five centuries later, and it would thus behoove us to learn from his works and life.
