They happen when warm air rises over cold air. These blizzards rarely happen in the south so they would hardly happen in Mississippi. Blizzards last 3 hours or more for a prolonged time. They are rated 1-5, with 1 being the mildest and 5 being the worst. They can also be named sometimes.

You can predict a blizzard by visibility, the temperature, heavy snow, and strong winds. There will also be public broadcast by radio and television to warn people. You can evacuate, but be prepared. They do have shelters, but are mostly for those who are homeless.
