In the novel, The Kite Runner, the innocent and unaware youth experience the harsh realities of adulthood. Their loyalty and friendship is tested and the scars of betrayal heavily impair their childhood, adulthood and as well as their brotherhood. The kite runner uses the motif of the pomegranate tree to illustrate the complexities of friendship and self redemption, to highlight the theme of guilt and its potential for redemption from past wrongdoings. After witnessing the terrible tragedy of Hassan being raped, Amir feels guilty for running away and for allowing that to happen to Hassan. Amir then takes Hassan to their tree where he believes by going there the horrible incident will be forgotten. “Neither of us said anything.
