Throughout the novel, The Kite Runner, Hosseini was able to provide various ways in which cruelty had been exposed within each character. Most cruelty can form either satisfaction for some or guilt for others. Amir was exposed by being a cruel perpetrator and a guilty victim. Once he was told there is a way to be good again, he took advantage to complete his hope for redemption. The author portrays how cruelty can create guilt and redemption all in one by a pomegranate tree. As many trees were mentioned within almost every chapter, there was only one tree that symbolized the exact example of a relationship that was thrown away because of an act of cruelty. “There was a pomegranate tree near the entrance to the cemetery. The identity the protagonist wanted was an identity in which he didn’t have to be friends with a Hazara. From my understanding, in Afghanistan, the way a family works is that the parents always wanted their children to be as themselves. Not only that, but Afghanistan parents needed to be the ones to choose their children’s husbands and wives. It was so because this was their culture.
