Throughout history, alcohol has had impacts on individuals and families. In the 19th and 20th centuries, religious groups thought alcohol was from the devil and nothing good came from it. They worked hard at taking it away from people, and took great measure to make sure that it would not be able to influence future generations. Even though the prohibition was meant for good, this wasn't the case for most of the time because of the negativity that it caused in society.

The only positive things that came out of the banning alcohol was the cultural themes that developed from it. During this time the the movie and entertainment industry became very big. The theme ideas for movies were being derived from the things going on in society during this time which includes the prohibition. Most of the other effects that prohibition had were negative. This time period was the beginning of the prominence of bootlegging and organized crime. Making alcohol illegal did not stop people from wanting and obtaining alcohol, they just had to be more creative in the way they did. Bootlegging started by importing liquor illegally into the country and eventually people started producing their own liquor in the mountains. Medicinal liquor was being prescribed dishonestly and unnecessarily. To avoid getting caught the bootleggers had to work together. This was the start of gangs and organized crime. Most gangs started by just transporting alcohol but they more than often evolved into bigger things like handling narcotics, gambling and prostitution.
