In the novel The Giver, written by Lois Lowry, the main character Jonas experiences many positive and negative situations. This novel is about a community that is perfect in their point of view. From Jonas’ and The Givers point of view, the community is controlling and a dystopia. Jonas’ experiences develop a theme over the course of the novel by teaching the reader that the choices you make can affect your future. Although some readers may believe that choices do not affect your future positively and negatively, Jonas’ experiences throughout the novel show differently.

Jonas’ decisions led to positive outcomes because in the novel, he had to take a pill for stirrings, which were emotions and feelings for others in the community, and he decided that he didn’t need to take them. The Government Officials wanted Sameness in the community and Jonas felt that that he needed to feel the stirrings so that he could make a positive decision. “The next morning, for the first time, Jonas did not take his pill.”(129) This shows that Jonas makes positive choices and has feelings from the memories that he shouldn’t take his pill. “Something within him, something that had grown there through the memories, told him to throw the pill away.”(129) This shows that Jonas had a feeling that moved within him, that he didn’t need to take the pill and so …show more content…

When he decided that he needed to escape, he grabbed the leftover scraps of food from the previous meal. “ He had robbed the community of food: a very serious crime, even though what he had taken was leftovers, set out on the dwelling doorsteps for collection.(165)” This shows that Jonas didn’t get enough food when he escaped and only got leftovers. “ Jonas had secretly left his dwelling.
