Popular culture in post-war Australia was immensely influenced by American and British culture. Upon the end of World War 2, Australians experienced increased leisure time with nothing to fill it with. The Union had successfully enforced the 8 x 8 x 8 principle, thus supplying Australians with 8 hours of work, 8 hours of leisure and 8 hours of sleep. Increasing globalisation meant that the average Australian became more aware of the world around them, rather than the impenetrable bubble of their farm or township that they belonged to. This knowledge of foreign ideas and behaviours were quickly adopted because of their tantalizing appeal and soon became extremely common in Australian society.
“It was called the atomic age and the fabulous fifties. It was an era where Americans had fun; this joyful mood came in part from the robust post war economy.” Factories increased their output to keep up with the growing consumer demand in America, and satisfy the needs of a post war Europe. The defense industry continued to make military supplies in reaction to the Cold War. America’s economy was the biggest in the world.
Australian rock is a developed genre from the U.K, U.S.A and Europe, as well as its own unique Australian sound with pub rock and indigenous music. Australian rock had its roots in the 1950’s and 60’s when the particular style of music was quickly growing popular overseas. In the 1970s bands such as AC/DC, Cold Chisel and Little River Band became well known for their rock and by the 80s Australian music had developed its own original rock sound and became popular around the world. Performing live music in pubs soon proved to help bands as this is how they developed their style in the early days of their careers. Although, one band in particular found it difficult to comfortably fit into the new wave of Australia rock- INXS.
Elvis’s “Heartbreak Hotel” and little Richard’s “Tutti-Frutti” started up their careers and sent them straight to the top. Both Elvis Presley and Little Richard had a significant role in the 1950’s because they made Rock and roll popular, and they had a major effect on youths during the 1950’s. Little Richard and Elvis Presley both helped bring Rock and roll
The 1960s was the golden era of toys, as there were countless of toys to choose from and parents spent more on their children, compared to previous decades. Board games continued to be popular forms of entertainment in the 1960s. At this time, the board games were very family oriented; designed for all ages to join together in competitive fun. " Family Board game nights" were a serious matter.
Rock N’ Roll was a new music genre accepted and loved by many teenagers of the time. While their parents felt that Elvis Presley ruined music, the teens disagreed, and with so many teenagers at the time, there were many to keep the genre alive. Teens wanted to release the tensions that bubbled beneath the smooth surface of postwar America. In a biography about Presley, a.k.a. the king of Rock N’ Roll, it writes a historical moment, when Presley was filmed from only the waist-up.
Pop culture during World War II was greatly influenced for the better and for the worse. WWII caused much of America to conserve their resources and efforts for the war, instead of spending money, time and their resources on leisure time. While some leisure activities were hurting during wartime, certain activities actually benefitted from WWII. Certain leisure activities such as baseball, and comic books were used to help boost the mood, and morale during these hard times. Leisure activities during the war were used to keep America’s mind off of the hard times of war, and to forget what was really going on in the world.
The British Invasion occurred in the 1960’s when rock and pop music groups from the United Kingdom became very prominent in the United States. Due to the powerful tones of American rock and roll in the 1950’s, many British youth tried to recreate the image and sound of popular American musicians. Countless acts failed, but a few prevailed and went on to become some of the greatest performers in musical history. The Invasion brought an end to musical groups that once dominated the American music charts. Authentic rock and roll originated and emerged in the United States during the late 1940’s and early 1950’s.
“I have a dream that one day on the red hills of Georgia, sons of former slaves and the sons of former slave owners will be able to sit down together at the table of brotherhood ” (King, M. L., 1963) The 1960’s were one of the most creative periods among other period. Known as the decade of revolution in politics, music and society, the 1960’s pop culture began in the United States and the United Kingdom before it spread to mainland Europe and different parts of the world. After years of nightmare when World War II has finally ended, it was a period of readjustment and remaking especially in Europe. This made the youngsters on the 60’s bewildered and they began to question their values about life.

In 2017, viewers might not listen to “The Shadow” because of how some of the female characters are portrayed. Also, technology has changed from a record player to the Internet, which has influenced viewership of the modern era.
Radio in Australia fits within the larger landscape of media and communications and therefore needs to be considered within the broader framework of the media in general. Academic theories began in the early nineteenth century as mass media became more common. Early Marxist views from the Frankfurt School were that mass media enslaved the working classes through “diversion and misinformation” (eds Cunningham & Turnbull, 2014, p.17). Antonio Gramsci added to this with his theory of hegemony, which was that the ruling classes at least gained the “resistant and unstable consent” (eds Cunningham & Turnbull, 2014, p.18) of the working classes.
“We live in a box of space and time. Movies are windows in its walls. They allow us to enter other minds, not simply in the sense of identifying with the characters, although that is an important part of it, but by seeing the world as another person sees it.” - Roger Ebert The history of cinema now covers more than a century, with the twentieth century being the first to be recorded in motion pictures. Since the invention of films at the end of the nineteenth century, they have been known as a mode of preservation, preserving for future generations not only the images but the actions of people from history.
Rock music in the 1960s was egalitarian, eclectic, and real based on a number of reasons. To explain the 'real' piece of rock music in the 1960s, one would have to know that there was war going on overseas that didn't make sense to Americans as to why it was going on (the Vietnam war). There was also still severe inequality between blacks and whites causing protests to occur via the Civil Rights movement, led by Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. There was inequality between women and mens rights. These issues caused dissatisfaction to occur in the American people.
