Australian rock is a developed genre from the U.K, U.S.A and Europe, as well as its own unique Australian sound with pub rock and indigenous music. Australian rock had its roots in the 1950’s and 60’s when the particular style of music was quickly growing popular overseas. In the 1970s bands such as AC/DC, Cold Chisel and Little River Band became well known for their rock and by the 80s Australian music had developed its own original rock sound and became popular around the world. Performing live music in pubs soon proved to help bands as this is how they developed their style in the early days of their careers. This is ultimately how INXS commenced their mark in America. In 1983 they began their U.S tour and played their first New York City headlining show at The Ritz in May and also at the U.S festival in California which they had 300,000 attendees cheer for 2 encores. The bands success began to spread around the world and they performed their debut show in London, England at The Astoria. INXS became the first international rock band to play in Guam in September of 1984 and In July of 1985, the band’s Sydney performance for the Live Aid benefit concert was broadcast worldwide. In October of 1985, they released their next album, Listen Like Thieves but it wasn’t after the hit single What You Need was released the following January, that Listen Like Thieves reached gold status in the America and eventually went platinum. In the following year in May INXS took off on their If You Got It, Shake It world tour. Their next album Kick was released in 1987 in October and in January of 1988 was certified gold and platinum at the same time, eventually selling 10 million copies worldwide. The single “Need You Tonight” became the band’s first Number One song on the U.S. charts. All three of the succeeding singles from Kick—“Devil Inside,” “New Sensation,” and “Never Tear Us Apart”—reached Billboard’s Top 10. INXS swept the MTV Video Music Awards in September of 1988 with five awards for the “Need You Tonight/Mediate” video. In January, the group received its first Grammy nomination for “Best Rock Performance by a Group.” One of INXS’s greatest achievements was performing live at Wembley Arena to a sold out 72,000 fans on the 13th of July
