Revolution in Rock “Punk is musical freedom. It's saying, doing and playing what you want. In Webster's terms, 'nirvana' means freedom from pain, suffering and the external world, and that's pretty close to my definition of Punk Rock.” This was said by iconic rock legend, Kurt Cobain (brainyquote.com). This twenty seven year old man and his band, Nirvana, changed music forever and influenced many artists after them. Together they made an immeasurable difference in the music industry, as well as in individual people’s lives. He was not just a singer, Cobain also was a guitarist and a songwriter. He taught the world that you can turn nothing into something if you set your mind to it and work hard to achieve it. Kurt, like any other human had his downfalls and struggles in life, but he always came back. His music career began with his first concert on March 7, 1987 (Burlingame 34). They started playing shows and they had some true fans. By the end of many shows they were known to smash their instruments. Nirvana was doing very well and soon started recording their first album called Bleach. Nirvana approximately sold 40,000 copies of their new album (Rubin). They played hundreds of shows and then started touring around the country. More and more college radio stations started playing their songs. They were doing so well in the US and all across the world. In 1991, they signed with a record label named Geffen (Rubin). They recorded a new album titled Nevermind. Geffen’s goal for Nirvana was to sell around 150,000 copies of their album.
