Potato Catalase Lab Report

866 Words4 Pages

This lab consists of four main parts, all relating to the main purpose of observing and measuring the effects that changes in temperature, pH, and enzyme concentration can have on reaction rates of an enzyme catalyzed reaction, as mentioned previously. In the first part we observe a normal catalase reaction and rate its reaction rate. In the second part we learned which tissues, of the ones tested, contained catalase. In the third part we saw how temperature can leave an effect on catalase activity. The fourth and final part was to observe the effect that pH has catalase activity. Before proceeding to begin our experiment, we gathered our materials of vinegar, baking soda, hydrogen peroxide, pH meter, stirring rod, pipettes, fresh liver, …show more content…

Our tissue/substrate consisted of potato, apple, and chicken. In this part of the experiment we placed two milliliters of hydrogen peroxide into three empty and clean test tubes and placed one substrate in each test tube. The reaction rate of the test tube with potato was two from we can infer it has some catalase, refer to Figures… . The reaction rate of the apple was zero, having no reaction, which we inferred that it has no catalase. The reaction rate of the chicken was a one, with very little reaction, we can infer that it has small amount of …show more content…

We started of by adding a small piece of liver to an empty test tube and placing just enough water to cover it. After this we placed it in a hot bath for five minutes and after letting it cool we tested to see its reaction rate with hydrogen peroxide, it received a one because of the very little reaction occurring. Then we got four more empty test tubes and filled two of them with hydrogen peroxide and two of them with equal amounts of liver. Then we placed a test tube with hydrogen and another test tube with liver into an ice bath and placed the remaining into a warm bath for three minutes. After this we tested the reaction rates by pouring the respective hydrogen peroxide and live (warm with warm and cold with cold). The warm test tubes had a reaction rate of four while the cold got a reaction rate of
