Silence or Art? Art can be defined as “The expression or application of human creative skill and imagination producing works to be appreciated primarily for their beauty or emotional power” (Oxford Dictionary). Art can be found almost anywhere and everywhere at the exact same time. Whether it’s in a scenic setting, in melodic music, or even in the simplest of paintings, art’s been prevalent all throughout history and is even found dating back to around 60,000 years ago. Artists create art for various reasons, whether it’s for entertainment or even as a form of expression. In the film Pootie Tang, Pootie comes out with a new song entitled “ ”. Art is aesthetically and emotionally pleasing. Pootie’s new song has no melody or lyrics. It is essentially nothingness and therefore, should not appeal to the emotions or senses at all. The song itself has no form or expression since it is pure silence. The audience probably didn’t even know what the purpose of the song was; after all, they didn’t even realize that it was a song. When Pootie’s “art” was first broadcasted on the radio, the people listening thought it was a radio glitch since there was absolutely no sound. They can be seen adjusting the sound dials. Only after the radio host made it clear that the silence was not a radio glitch but in fact Pootie’s new song, the audience was then seen thoroughly appreciating the music. However, the characters personal bias should not be confused with their enjoyment of the song. The characters most definitely admired or even idolized Pootie Tang because as soon as Pootie’s name was mentioned, the audience
