Essay 2- SPENT Activity/ Poverty My hometown in Burlington NC which is right near Elon University. I have lived my entire life in Burlington and have realized it’s not that big of a town. The total population for Burlington is 49,963 (Census) and 21.9% of that is living in poverty. So about 10,942 people are living in poverty, which is about a fourth of the total population of Burlington. It was surprising to find out that many of the people in my town are living in poverty. I guess since where my neighborhood and the surroundings places I go are at I don’t see it as much as if I went downtown Burlington. Burlington is filled with churches that help the community by doing food drives, clothes drives and any help they can do for individuals. Many local schools do food drives, a coat drive in the winter and Christmas Cheer. Schools also have social workers and guidance counselors who will help kids get resources they need and for the family. At my school each year, all of the clubs are given a family from our school to buy things they need for Christmas. I love doing this since it gives kids a Christmas but its special knowing you're helping someone from your school. Salvation Army organization will help with expenses along with Duke Power, coats and fans for elders. Allied Churches of Alamance County is a big group that is a food pantry and homeless shelter. Then when kids were thrown in the situation I would try to make sure I had enough money for my children so they could do things they wanted and I could supply them with their needs. There also were dilemmas that challenged my values and made me think what would be the best decision to survive. An example of this was when it said that your dog is sick and I could pay either $50 dollars to put it down, $450 to do the procedure or do nothing and let it suffer. As much as I love animals this was a very hard decision for me but I ended up putting the dog down because I had no way to pay for the operation and if I did pay I would have been in debt. I had to think about paying rent, food and my own health when making this decision. IN every decision I made I had to think of every little thing that I might need money for and would have to try to save my money because you never know what will happen and that is what I think is the hardest thing for the working poor. Also having to pay so much for rent and transportation. Luckily in the game I never faced a medical problem since that would probably would have used all my money even though I had to pay a large amount monthly for
