“Power Corrupts those who process it”. The corruption of power my occur with poor leadership in the government, and the ignorance of its followers. In Animal Farm by George Orwell, an allegorical fable, the author demonstrates the failure of the farm by introducing the misleading of the pigs. In the exposition of the story, the animals revolts against Mr. Jones led by Old Major’s desire to rebel. Since then, he used different methods to gain animals’ rights by using his”unlimited power”. The lack of education of the animals and their ignorance created the downfall of the Animal Farm. Orwell demonstrates man’s selfishness and apathy as the downfall of society through the characters of Napoleon and Benjamin. The author introduces Benjamin by saying,” Old Benjamin, the donkey, seemed quite unchanged since the rebellion...About the rebellion and its results he would express no opinion.”(Orwell 30) Benjamin’s apathy was shown when the author described him as a careless donkey. He seemed irresponsible of everything and his surroundings. In his mind, revolution may give changes of political power, but everyone else will remain natural. Unfortunately, he could not see the major changes it would bring. After Clover found out the commandment was secretly changed by someone,”[She] asked Benjamin to read her the sixth commandment, and when Benjamin , as usual, said that he refused to meddle in such matters.”(Orwell 91) This is another quote the also reflects Benjamin’s apathy by the rejection to read the commandment for Clover. He received more educational chances that other animals, however, he denies to protect the current situation of the farm using his knowledge. This contributes to the downfall with his ignorance and apathy caused the society to change. These are two reasons why Benjamin’s apathy is responsible for the downfall of Animal
