In the book Roll of Thunder, Hear my cry by Mildred D.Taylor. Power is held differently by the characters of the book specifically the children’s Momma, Mr. Morrison, and Mr. Simms and how each of these characters use their power and how their power affects others in the story. Mama’s authority is shown while she ensures her kids that everything will be alright in a gentle maternal authority. She said ¨Look Cassie,go on,will ya please?Papaĺl know what to do.” also, she said ¨Go back to bed,children(Taylor 256) She gained this power because her children are obedient to her, she uses this in a good way because her children obey her. It is exhibited that Mr. Morrison has physical power in the book and over the people in the their town in Mississippi. Simms shows his authoritative power in the book by yelling at Cassie while on the street, saying to move for his daughter. It reads “When my gal Lillian Jean says for you to get yo’self off the sidewalk ,you get.you here”(Taylor 114) ,also he has this power because he is a white high class citizen,he has this power because most african americans are lesser than he is.He uses this power in a bad way,he uses it so people will listen to him and do what he says. Mama has authority over her children because they listen to her and do what she says that is why she has authority over , people who don’t have authority over can’t make people obey them this proves that mama has authority over her children. Mr.Morrison has power because he can throw men like a sack of feathers and beat people up pretty badly a person with no physical strength cannot do this,That proves he has physical strength. Mr.Simms has authoritative power,because he can get a person to do what he says, he gets people to do this because he is a night rider and is a dangerous person to the black
