Reading this chapter and thinking about how my childhood compared to what the book defines how the African American community is really is discouraging. Throughout my life everyone in my community played a role in how I am and became successful. The more I read this book I become
Being Taken into Slavery Although the African Americans of all ages were confused about the horrible things happening to them, some of them stayed strong. The hard life that the African Americans went through were horrific. The many trials and tribulations they faced only seemed to get worse as their “initiation” into slavery continued.
In Hill’s (1972) seminal work, The Strengths of Black Families, on African American families, he states that “strong kinship bonds, a strong work orientation, adaptability of family roles, a strong achievement orientation, and a strong religious orientation were characteristics that have been functional for their survival, development and stability”. Hill (1999) states that strong kinship ties are the greatest enduring family qualities and are imbedded in West African cultural values. This strong kinship connection encompasses the significance of extended family, which is inclusion of fictive kin as family, the high value placed on children, and honor and respect for older adults (Billingsley, 1992).
During Jim Crow much worse things happened to African-Americans. Blacks endured unspeakable acts carried out by racist whites in the South. Throughout this essay we will explore what life was like growing up in the South as an African-American during the Jim Crow era and what it meant to be Black during this time. African-Americans were
During this time, a tribe stuck together and worked to gather food, make shelter, and participate in their traditions. In the article, Ties That Bind: The Story of an Afro-Cherokee Family in Slavery and Freedom, it discusses how the family sticks together to maintain their
Peekay has lost everyone close to him. Its terrible and nothing anyone should ever go through yet he does and still, he is able to push through and become an amazing, for the most part, young man. Bryce Courtenay has written a powerful novel called Power of One. A story of a struggling young boy, his life, and how he must overcome, adapt, and push through many obstacles. In the end, Peekay gets to pursue his dreams and becomes a very educated, very strong, and powerful young man.
"We cannot escape our origins, however hard we might try, those origins contain the key – could we but find it – to all that we later become." (Wilkerson, 302pg.) Being an African American in 1840 living the United States, meant shackles was on hands and feet. Just hoping the family can all stay together, standing on stages being looked at looked at and evaluated like livestock. North Carolina is where this journey began with people stripping other people of their culture, language, religion, and identity-- to only give them another one.
For African American people, they were often afraid
Growing up in a Colored Home Back in the 1960s The social, political, and economic conditions of the 1960s influenced the difficulties of growing up in a colored home. African Americans were faced with a society that was unfriendly towards their existence as individuals because racism and discrimination were common during this time. Black families in the 1960s were strong and resilient, as they relied on each other and their community to survive and succeed despite the numerous obstacles they faced.
The history of African American’s family structure during slavery which were every member of a family was sold to individual owners. Family structure is important to develop and cultivate in the African American culture. The tradition of hospitality in the southern African American culture implies the cultural values of the principles of the Christian faith. Everyone should show respect toward authority figures, parents, elders, and others.

There are many open wounds in the African-American community that have not healed what so ever. Disintegration of family structures in the African-American community has been a persistent problem for far too long. High out of wedlock birth rates, absent fathers, and the lack of a family support network for many young African-Americans have led to serious problems in America's urban areas. The persistence of serious social problems in inner-city areas has led to a tragic perpetuation of racial prejudice as well. African Americans still face a litany of problems in the 21st century today.
At first, after hearing the name of the movie and getting to know what it was about a bit, I had thought that I was definantly not going to like it. I thought that "The Power of One" sounded a bit cheesy, and that it was not going to be a good movie. After watching it although, it ended up actually being a really good movie. The movie had a lot of entcing and exiting scence in it that made it enjoyable to watch. One of my favorite scenes in the movie is when Peekay and the African American from the big tribe were boxing, with all of the people surrounding them.
Usually in African American communities you hear a wise saying “it takes a village to raise a child” and that that is exactly how it was. My friends and I were always watched by older neighbors around us. We knew to respect them and also knew they had our best interest. The candy lady down the street always gave us free treats if we brought her good grades on report card day. Although we may not have had a lot we had love.
Anna One person being able to change the life of someone or a group of people’s lives. That is what I think the Power of One means. That I can make a difference in someone's life by possibly just listening to something they have to say or talk to them about what could be bothering them and being a shoulder to cry on. I have recently had to be a shoulder to cry on for a friend because they were having a hard time at school that day and in their home life recently. I wanted to help them
