The police lights are blaring around a house in the middle of the night, you are a police officer inside the house and have the one of two suspected murderers in front of you and his phone in your hand because you have been led to believe that critical evidence to your case is on his phone. What would you do in this situation, look on his phone for the evidence? After all, it may be the only way to bring the perpetrator to justice, but some of the public disagrees and thinks that looking on his phone violates his privacy. Being able to use suspects personal devices has, according to Detective Chris in passage two, “helped us to find who may be involved in that crime.” This shows that the police have already used the tactic of searching a suspect's personal devices and it has significantly helped the police in catching criminals. This has helped the police so much because they are able to view messages on a suspect's phone about the crime they committed and use it as evidence against them. The policy that officials can look at someone’s personal devices has been made, according to passage two, “some people also believe that the policy will deter people from committing crimes.” This is because if police can freely use your personal device you won't be able to do anything involving the crime on your device and won't be able to figure out a good way to commit a crime without being suspicious. Criminals will have to find other ways to plan a crime which may be even easier for police to find out before the crime is committed than if they used their phone which would be easy for police to find out information on after the crime.
