Current Issues Facing Police Administration Being a police officer in America here recently has proven to be difficult due to the amount of issues they face on a daily basis. Not only is it the local and state agencies that have had the pressure riding on their backs but the federal agency’s as well. There are factors such as social media, terrorism (homegrown and foreign), and the drug crisis along with many others. These are the issues that are more commonly known to the public and discussed more in the everyday lives of people. Though those issues are concerns there are a few more that take precedence over the attention of administers and are less likely to be discussed thoroughly by civilians; recruitment and retention, budget issues and relationships between the community and police. How these three issues are handled determines how well a law enforcement agency can cooperate as a whole and in the community. Local law enforcement officers that work in the administration field such as the police chief are in charge of all three of these issues and have a lot to consider when it comes to their obligations as an administrator. Recruitment and retention is just one of the many issues police administrators face, there are also problems of the relationships between the community and police and the issue of budgets within each department. Administrators have a tough job in terms of hiring, control of their officers, days’ worth of reports and as always the firing process.
