The AVID program has been important to me because I believe that without it I would not be as successful as I am. More specifically, AVID has allowed me the safe environment for my personal growth to flourish. Additionally, because it allowed my emotional maturity to grow as much as it did, I have been more academically successful. I have always had the self-motivation to strive for the best academically, but I let my emotions get in the way of my success, especially when it came to extracurricular involvement. For me, the most prominent emotion I let get in my way was my anxiety. My anxiety kept me from being successful because I knew I had the potential to be a leader, but I was too scared of the responsibilities that came with it. This changed when I met Ms. Jungwirth who saw my potential and pushed me. When I saw that she believed in my ability to be a leader, I believed more in myself. When I first joined AVID five years ago, I did not expect to become the “people person” that I am currently. The specific part of the program that aided me with this was the team building activities we had on “Fun for Fridays”. Especially, the ones Ms. Keck had us do because they forced us out of our bubbles not only, mentally, but also physically. Another activity that has helped me interact with my peers more efficiently are tutorials. Tutorials have taught me the importance of being able to communicate with my peers in an academic setting. I know this is a valuable skill because as I move onto university I might not be able to get as much help from my professor, so I need to be able to turn to my peers.
