BE YOURSELF Precious is a tragic movie which is based on Sapphire’s novel, “Push”. In 2009, this movie

influenced thousands and brought many rewards. The movie takes place in Harlem in 1987,

and all the scenes are related with the main heroine character Clarieece Precious Jones. She is

a 16-year-old girl who struggles with everything in her life. She is pregnant, obese, asocial,

and exposed to violence in home. The movie tells people Precious’s life and all the feelings

inside her. Besides her life, the movie has three main concept which are hidden in all of the

In

movie, one can see the bad sides of the society with Precious’s life, spectators can see easily

distinction because of her physical appearance and skin color. Precious feels abnormal

because of people’s reactions and she can not socialise with this feeling. In the movie, there

are lots of scene about restraint of society such as outlook to homosexuel, perception of

beauty, and perfectionism. There is a teacher in Each One Teach One school who is a lesbian

and living with her girlfriend. When Precious meets this teacher, Mrs. Rain, remembers her

mother’s words about homosexuel. Her mother says homosexuel are bad people even they do

nothing bad, and these words show the general outlook of society. On the other hand, there is

a scene which Precious looks mirror and sees herself as a thin, blonde and white color girl. It

indicates the perception of beauty. Also, Precious’s dreams are being a famous star, losing weight and find a handsome and attractive boyfriend. It is that perfectionism of society
