Dear Martin is one of the best books I have ever read. This books theme was about how black people were discriminated, and what they went through, with racism. This book had very serious scenes, and topics. For example at the beginning of the book when Justyce was helping a friend who had been drinking too much, into her car when a police officer thinks something else is happening and puts Justyce into handcuffs and escorts him to the police station. One piece of important information that I didn’t tell you was it that Justyce is black, and his friend is white. As you can see this changes the story, gives you an idea of why the police officer thought something else what happening. This is a quote from Justyce in this scene in the book, “Yeah, there are no more “colored” water fountains, and it’s supposed to be illegal to discriminate, but if I can be forced to sit on the concrete in too-tight cuffs when I’ve done nothing wrong, it’s clear there’s an issue. How Justyce went through all of these horrible things, and still managed to be a good person in the end. Throughout this book Justyce went through lots of changes in how he thinks and feels, and what he notices about different situations. I noticed that when he made a mistake or something bad had just happened in the book, you never really realize how they are thinking, but in this book you knew everything that he was thinking, which I thought really helped convey the meaning of this book. How people that are the same as us just with different coloured skin went through all of these horrible things, that white coloured people thought that was right at the time.
