Prejudice in Maycomb County
In Maycomb county, Alabama there was a court case full of injustice and bias. Maycomb county is a fairly tight-knit community but they still have its faults. In the Book To Kill a Mockingbird, there is a lawyer Atticus finch. He represented Tom Robinson who is a colored man that was accused of raping a girl named Mayella Ewell. Mayella lives with her abusive and alcoholic father. Mr. Gilmor is the lawyer that is representing Mayella. Tom Robinson was accused of raping Mayella Ewell and the jury falsely convicted him. The people of Maycomb county are the reason for Tom Robinson's conviction and his death. The people of Maycomb think that Tom Robinson raped Mayellla even though they know nothing about the case. In the book To Kill a Mockingbird, a mob of farming men went to the county jail. The jury still convicted him and sent him to prison. During the trial, Atticus asked Mr. Ewell if he could read and write. The conclusion they came to was Bob Ewell is left-handed. This is important because that Mayella was beaten on the right side of her face. Tom Robinson stood up and appeared to be off balance “His left arm was fully twelve inches shorter than his right…”(Lee Page 211) this shows that Tom Robinson could not have beaten Mayella and that it could have been her father who beat her. This shows that the community was biased, and they did not look at the evidence that was presented to them by the defense also known as Atticus.
