There is a wide misconception that pills have the ability to cure any problem. Depressed? Take a pill. Are you in pain? Here’s a bottle of Oxycodone. If you have a problem there is a pill out there that can fix you. Prescription drugs are on the rise and people are constantly turning to their “happy pills” as an easy fix to solve any and all ailments. Medication is prescribed for a variety of reasons, including, but not limited to depression, pain, anxiety and sleep problems. Yet, the fact of the matter is, pills only hide emotions and feelings behind a cloud that essentially draws one away from reality changing their perception for a short time. In my first year of college, I have already experienced four people over dose in my lifetime. Accessibility of prescription drugs is increasing and it is the responsibility of all to step in should they witness or suspect misuse of any drugs, prescription or otherwise. Doctors and nurses are the first ones in line who need to keep a keen eye out and be extra aware of how one may attempt to obtain unneeded drugs. Deceit, bribery, and forgery are common practices employed by those seeking medication primarily for recreation or profit (Wilford). For patients that may be at a higher risk of abusing medication that was prescribed to them with the intent to curb suicidal thoughts can be slightly harder. Giving suicidal patients prescribed drugs, such as an anti-depressant, can actually increase their risk of suicide as it places a way to act upon fatal thoughts within arm’s reach
