Consequently, the Americans were desperate for a president that could support them. Therefore, they anticipated that Franklin D. Roosevelt would alleviate the economic issue. Throughout his first inaugural address in 1933, with utmost candor, he demonstrated that he was reliable enough to take the duty as the president.
The Great Depression was a time during 1929 to 1939, It was the longest lasting economic disaster. The two presidents in term during this crisis, Franklin D. Roosevelt and Herbert Hoover, approached this problem in different ways. Hoover’s idea on this was to have private citizens help each others, while Roosevelt believed the government should take care of its people with social programs. This unfaithful day was the day where the stock market plummeted leading to a great crash in the economy. This led plenty of individuals to become homeless and live in a state of poverty. Many of these individuals began to create their own society's known as Hoovervilles.

Since Franklin was homeschooled for most of his childhood, Sara had a very strict schedule for young Franklin to follow. His parents were very important people, during Franklin’s childhood he had met many politicians as his parents’ close friends. When Franklin was five years old his parents were invited to the White House by the president at the time Grover Cleveland, who was a family friend of the Roosevelt family.

Many opposed The First New Deal claiming that it pushed the nation towards socialism, while others did not think the New Deal went far enough.
