Rehabilitation of Incarcerated Persons As of 2023, there are approximately 2.2 million incarcerated individuals living inside of prisons within the United States borders. (BBC) With the large number of inmates currently incarcerated, these individuals need to have a constructive mindset. This mindset can benefit the individuals who have done something traumatizing that got them put into the situation that they are in. The mindset that I am referring to is the skill of resilience. The dictionary definition of rehabilitation is the action of restoring someone to health or normal life through training and therapy after imprisonment, addiction, or illness. Rehabilitation plays a huge role in prisons around the world as the inmates work to restore their mental health and come back to the community or outside world better than they were before they got put into jail. There are many jobs and careers in the field of rehabilitation, including a counselor or a Ph.D. The people in those job fields help with the life of a person who is struggling. The people in those professions go to prisons around the country and around the world to work with inmates to restore natural well being. In these sessions, inmates learn how to control their anger and frustration in nonviolent ways that will not only benefit themselves, but also the people that they surround themselves around. The program also helps inmates learn the difference between a healthy and a unhealthy relationship to help build better relationships with their family and friends compared to making toxic relationships that will hurt them even more. That is only one of the many reasons this group does what they do. The group also found that “Hurt people, hurt people”.(Corrections 1) If someone is dealing with a great amount of hurt inside of their body, they will put that hurt onto someone else to try and help themselves take their hurting away. This is a very ineffective way of coping with past trauma as it sometimes will cut the recipient down and down until they try to cope with that issue creating a cycle of problems. That is what this organization is trying to stop by rehabbing people who are struggling from their past trauma and develop better coping strategies that the individuals can use. If more of these programs are developed, the number of repeat offenders will go down
