In the United States, there has been a major argument between people, regarding if they are for or against the Death Penalty. The reason for the Death Penalty is taking one's life for the punishment of killing another, even then there are many murderers that are not on death row. The Death Penalty can only be given to a murderer that seems to be offensive to moral principles; repugnant. I am for the Death Penalty in many ways and believe that the reasons behind it have impacted the world as we know it today. Now, what really are the reasons that would make someone be for the Death Penalty? Capital punishment is used as a deterrent for future crime, an act of balancing society, and it is almost impossible that we would execute someone innocent. Society has the highest interest in preventing murders and it should use the strongest punishment available to deter murder, crime, and that is the Death Penalty. How capital punishment affects murder rates can be explained through general deterrence theory, which supposes that increasing the risk of apprehension and punishment for crime deters individuals from committing crime. There is no proof that any innocent person has actually been executed since increased safeguards and appeals were added to our death penalty system in the 1970s. Even if such executions have occurred, they are very rare. Imprisoning innocent people is also wrong, but we can’t empty the prisons because of that minimum risk. If it can be shown that someone is innocent, surely a governor would grant clemency and spare the person. Hypothetical claims of innocence are usually just delaying tactics to put off the execution as long as possible.
