The Death Penalty
Imagine that someone goes to one of your family members and does something horrible. Maybe this person rapes your family member or kidnaps them. What if this person even murders your family member? If they go to court for this, they may get sentenced to life in prison with no further punishments. If you were in this situation, what would you want to happen to the person that committed this crime? This is why we should have capital punishment for these horrible crimes. Capital punishment has been known to deter crimes, it provides closure to the families, and criminals should not be allowed to take a police officer or an innocent person’s life without serious punishment. One big reason why capital punishment should be allowed is because it has been known to deter crime. Fewer homicides will take place in the U.S. “All penalties have some deterrent effect, and the more severe the penalty, the more it deters.” (Jacoby) Criminals will be afraid of committing these crimes when their own lives are at stake. In 2016, a total of 135 police officers died in the line of duty, which is the highest number of police fatalities on the job since 2011 (Melissa chan). Less police officers will be killed on the line of duty if the criminals that murder them are sentenced to death. Twenty-one of those 135 officers were killed in ambush-style attacks across the country. This form of killing is even more unacceptable than a regular murder. The average annual totals of police fatalities is 151 over the past decade. Out of about 1.1 million police officers, it may not seem like much, but that number is still 151 more than it should be. There have also been many cases of innocent people being murdered in ambush-style attacks (Sarah, Mongoliola).
