Grief is the process of reacting to a loss. It can be reacted physically by death, socially, divorce or occupational. In this case, grief is presented in the novel Brother, which is narrated by Micheal based on how him and his mother grieved over the sudden death of his Brother Francis who was snot ten years old at the age of 19 . In Brother, David Chariandy showed anger, losing touch with reality, and loneliness as the main effects of grief First, disconnection to reality can lead to anger, another symptom of grief.

Grieving is a common and unhappy process that many people go through in their lifetime. Through the grieving process, people often come to conclusions about their life. In Please Ignore Vera Dietz, Vera loses her best friend Charlie and tries to stray away from her parent’s examples, only to find out that she will have to come to terms with the loss of her best friend. In We Were Liars, Cadence gets sick in a tragic accident that causes her to wonder about her family and find out the truth. In both, Please Ignore Vera Dietz by A.S. King, and We Were Liars by E. Lockhart, we learn that when people grieve it causes more loss and unlawful actions.
They say that grief comes in five distinct stages; denial, anger, bargaining, depression, and acceptance. In contrast, it’s often said that everyone handles grief differently. How can these two concepts of loss not only coexist, but be widely accepted? Maybe it’s time we shift our focus to the latter.
When confronted with the death of a loved one, it is simply impossible for one to ignore the irrational feelings they contract. As emotional creatures, it is natural for humans to exhibit a series of predictable plagues: this is called ‘The Grieving Process’. Originally coined by Elizabeth Kubler-Ross in 1969, the grieving process, while not the same for everyone, has five widely accepted stages: denial, anger, bargaining, depression, acceptance. There is no particular order for any of these stages, with the exception of acceptance coming last, yet the grieving process gives us a detailed view of how to understand those going through great turmoil in their lives. This paper is going to explain each phase of the stages of Grief, not to be viewed in a specific order. Some will not go through all stages and as stated previously may not go through them in the exact order stated. In March of 2008, a family member passed and I experienced a few of the stages of grief, that is what led to the interest in this topic. The Stages of Grief:
After a death or loss of something close, people usually react similarly by going through the five stages of grief. These stages include denial, anger, bargaining, depression, and acceptance. During a death of my Great Aunt, my family went through the stages of grief. I was close with her when I was younger, but I do not have many memories I remember with her so I did not experience much grief. On the other hand, my Great Uncle went through a lot of grief since she was his older sister.
However, this is the beginning of the healing process. We begin to cope after we get over the immediate shock of the loss. At the end of this process all the feelings that we were denying begin to surface. Second, is the stage of anger.
The impending loss frequently intensifies the attachment to the dying person, causing an increase in concern for what they should or shouldn't do to comfort them. In contrast, anticipatory grief is a time for the gradual release of the dying person; saying "good-bye", "I love you", or "I forgive you". This period of grief before death is beneficial in preparing one emotionally and is a time to resolve old issues. Chronic grief is grieving that lasts for a prolonged or extended period of time.
There are may myths relating to grief that actually prolong the grieving process - such as remaining strong and composed, or staying busy after pet loss. The normal healthy grieving process is just that - a process not an event. This process goes through a number of phases. Grief often begins with anticipated loss, particularly in the case of long-running illness or euthanasia.
Coping with the loss of someone or something you love is one of life’s biggest challenges. Often, the pain of loss can feel overwhelming. You may experience all kinds of difficult and unexpected emotions, from shock or anger to disbelief, guilt, and profound sadness. The pain of grief can also disrupt your physical health, making it difficult to sleep, eat, or even think straight. These are normal reactions to significant loss.
